In episode 84 we sat down with Kevin Wohlmut to discuss his journey into the world of home brewing. Since then we’ve had listeners, coworkers, friends and even a few family members reach out to say how much they enjoyed the episode. Almost across the board they all followed that up with “Dang. I wish I could get into that”. That’s the thing. YOU TOTALLY CAN!
As you can tell by listening to the episode, Kevin is very well read. Like many of us when we find our passion, he has collected several resources that have helped him along the way. Fortunately for us he was more than happy to share them to assist those in need.
First is an introduction written by John Palmer. It lists all the basics such as needed equipment, brewing with different ingredients, formulating recipes and even links to get more assistance.
Speaking of getting assistance, one thing I’ve learned from many of our guests is that the best way to learn something is to ask those that are already immersed in the field. The following are two local Evansville, IN groups that champion the art of brewing. Don’t fret if you’re not a southern IN native as I’m sure there is a similar association near you!
Ohio Valley Homebrewers Association
Evansville Area Craft Beer Club
Kevin references a few times in the episode a book that he could draw a major influence from. This book is “Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers” written by Stephen Harrod Buhner. In it are mentions and details of lesser known healing aspects of some beers along with some interesting history. You can find it by visiting: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/157268.Sacred_and_Herbal_Healing_Beers
Also, something I found very interesting is the link to home brewing and witches. Yes, fly on a broom stick, dance around a cauldron, witches. HISTORY channel has a wonderful video detailing how some of the stereotypes may have begun.
I truly think this is a perfect guide to get you started on your path in home brewing. Kevin went way over and beyond to provide awesome, accessible links to cover almost all the basics and has even volunteered to answer any questions one may have. You can find him and his tasty creations by following along his group “The Brew Fairies” https://www.facebook.com/thebrewfairies/
I hope this all helps but more so I hope you bring by any wonderful concoctions you create. Cheers!
